"I already told your king he's a bigot to his face, and that Hyrule probably wouldn't want to open trade relations with a nation that treats people who use magic as criminals."
"No, it was an accident. BUT, if people were allowed to do magic without being terrified they'd be BANISHED, I could be home already."
Link leapt to the bleachers to give himself another few inches of height. The Ashura was not having any of it. There were people who needed someone to speak up for them, and Link figured, he was the logical one to do so.
"How is that any way to run a kingdom? Through terror? Do as we say or we'll banish you? Taking people away from their friends and family?!" The Triforce was glowing slightly as he spoke.
"Healing magic? Nah, we'll just let people die. Magic to help crops? Nah, starving people are fine. Science is just fine, we don't need anything else, because, Din knows, we couldn't do even better by combining the two!!'
He leapt back off the bleachers, eyes blazing.
"Now. If you don't mind, I'm gonna find a way home. My princess is gonna need me, my dad and brother need me, and I don't want anything to do with you, thank you very much, ma'am."
"YOUNG MAN! How dare you!! Through terror? Does this LOOK like a kingdom ruled by terror? I assure you young man that most of the adults here have seen that, and those came about with a blatant abuse of magic. The people of Auradon are NOT starving! We are NOT dying. We have had no wars since King Beast united the kingdoms. No famines. All crises have been met and dealt with as they came up without the loss of life." She crossed her arms. "If the people you are mentioning that are worried about being banished are in fact who I think they are, you have spoken to too limited a group. There are students here who are here on probation. And others who were brought here that way that are welcomed but are still having difficulty adjusting. Their families are not here, their families are who we would be sending them back to. I presume Freddie is one of the ones trying to bend your ear, young man," she said nodding to the girl who was still watching this wide-eyed. She had clearly hoped that they had forgotten she was there. "Ask her where her family is, where her father and sister are. If she was banished we would not be separating the family, we would be reuniting it. And she is here on probation because she was not invited to be here, caused a lot of trouble when she arrived, almost got many people hurt, but then asked to remain and promised to behave if we would allow her to remain."
"You're doing it right now! You're holding past mistakes above their heads!"
Link moved to put himself between Freddie and the woman, as if to shield the girl. "When someone tries to do right, you forgive them wholly, you don't hold what they did against them forever!"
The boy took a deep breath. "My brother confessed to burning down our entire kingdom. And trying to kill a different me, like a lot. He was sorry and I forgave him. He has my entire trust and he'll always have it."
He took a single step forwards. "My best friend is a dead boy. He's been cursed into an imp for eternity. He put on a mask with a demon in it and almost made the moon fall and kill an entire world. Heck cursed me into being a Deku Scrub. I had to put on a mask with an even more powerful demon and fight him. He was sorry and I forgave him, and now we're best friends."
"What kind of place only loves someone until they screw up? What kind of people live that way? That people who've made mistakes are distrusted and treated like second rate citizens?"
He made a dismissive, disgusted, gesture. "Just let me find a way out of this place."
"Believe that we want to get you out of here as much as you want to leave at this point," she said. "But we are good, but not willing to make ourselves vulnerable. Villains do not simply become good people by being given a chance. Many of them had that chance and threw it away with both hands. Maybe you will risk your own life, but we will not risk the lives of the children here on the wish that a villian will reform themselves. What we are trying here is already dangerous enough. And the way that good children become good adults is by learning that actions have consequences. Good actions and bad. And that trust is earned and worked towards, always. For adults as well as children."
“That’s because you lack Courage and Compassion. You’ve probably never been alone. You probably don’t understand how it feels when everyone is gone. You are not as good as you seem to think you are. I trust people who tell me their faults not their laurels.”
Link shook his head, and lifted his ocarina. This time he played the Minuet of the Forest, putting his will into it. It had no power other than taking him to the Forest Temple.
He played the song, shutting his eyes, trying hard to picture the green forest of Hyrule, the Temple's entrance, and his friend Saria.
